how to access science resources on the VLE
get on the internet as usual
go to http://woodchurchscience.edublogs.org
look for VLE tab across the top and click it
enter the VLE using the link
enter your network username and password
you are now in the VLE
down the left hand side is a long list
look for ‘curriculum’ and click it
look for ’science’
choose your year and the resources will display in the middle

making 2bn tonnes of cement globally every year pumps out 5% of the world’s CO2 emissions – more than the entire aviation industry, so any innovations which will reduce this must be welcomed. british scientists (hooray!) have developed a new type of cement that ‘eats CO2′. you can read all about it here.

wirral schools science and technology day

10 year 9 pupils from woodchurch took part in this activity day at the discovery clc on 7th july 08. pupils were involved in three activities: a robot challenge, self-righting buoys and renewable energy driven cars. we came away with 2 trophies won in the robot challenge activity by lisa hill and jenny noonan. pupils were up against stiff competition from 5 other wirral schools; oldershaw, upton hall, birkenhead, south wirral and wirral grammar school for girls. well done to all who took part. team photo below.

why not enter this brilliant competition. cash prizes to be won! the theme for this year’s competition is ’science and sport’. entries can focus on anything related to how science supports the world of sport – from methods used in drug testing, to enhanced sportswear or equipment, to specialised training techniques. all formats will be accepted, for example: posters, powerpoint presentations, school magazine articles, information leaflets, work from a science or after school club. the closing date is 31st may 2008. see mr warren for further information or read more about it here.

william’s words is a great site for some simple classroom and revision activities. many can be used as starters and plenaries. its easy to use. just go to the ‘free resources’ tab and select by type of activity. you can even drill down to the unit you are doing at ks3. some fun puzzles too. highly recommended! the site is an accompaniment to the book ‘williams words’ – every science word you’ll ever need all in the one place.

36 pupils attended a full day of science sessions aimed at boosting sats levels from 4 to 5. many did datalogging for the first time, collecting temperature, light, dissolved oxygen and carbon dioxide levels using pasport dataloggers. leaflets were handed out, copies of which are available here.

climate change common sense – at last!

two uk climate researchers say some of their peers are “overplaying” the global warming message. professors paul hardaker and chris collier, both royal meteorological society figures, have voiced concerns. they say some researchers make claims about possible future impacts that cannot possibly be justified by the science. the pair believe this damages the credibility of all climate scientists. but both men hold the mainstream view on climate change – that human activity is the cause. but they think catastrophism and the “hollywoodisation” of weather and climate only work to create confusion in the public mind. they argue for a more sober and reasoned explanation of the uncertainties about possible future changes in the earth’s climate. lots more here, here and at the royal metereorological society website.
