here’s a couple of links to help with this topic. first is a projectable simulation of what happens when sodium, zinc and magnesium react with an acid. it also includes the test for hydrogen + a brief summary test. click where it says ‘launch sim’.

the second is a short video clip showing what happens when a small piece of sodium is dropped into both dilute and concentrated solutions of hydrochloric acid and nitric acid. note that there is no sound or narration. you can see that this is an extremely hazardous demonstration that is generally not performed in uk schools.

learn how to carry out food tests.

for teachers, you could project this on your whiteboard and use the quiz at the end as a plenary.

some great stuff here (skoool.co.uk) for both pupils and teachers. well worth a look, good for starters and plenaries and especially good for interactive revision.
