why not enter this brilliant competition. cash prizes to be won! the theme for this year’s competition is ’science and sport’. entries can focus on anything related to how science supports the world of sport – from methods used in drug testing, to enhanced sportswear or equipment, to specialised training techniques. all formats will be accepted, for example: posters, powerpoint presentations, school magazine articles, information leaflets, work from a science or after school club. the closing date is 31st may 2008. see mr warren for further information or read more about it here.

a team of scientists have met to discuss the biggest challenges of the next 50 years. top of the list is clean energy; in particular harnessing the power of the sun: just 1/10000 of the suns energy hitting us each day could provide 100% of our energy needs. read much more here

sir winston churchill showed signs of hyperactivity, poor attention and, later, manic depression. at school he failed dismally in the subjects that bored him but excelled when they excited his interest. the behaviour of overexcitable, sometimes aggressive, easily bored but often hugely entertaining and bright children is easily tipped over the edge.
research on hyperactive children with adhd at great ormond street hospital in 1993 showed that some responded to dietary restrictions. controlled studies on children in the isle of wight in 2002 showed that behaviour improved in some children when they avoided drinks with certain E additives.
the old advice was that E numbers 100 to 150 and preservatives E200 and 297 were probably responsible. the current rumour is that the list of those to be avoided has been narrowed to E102, 124, 110, 122, 129, 104 and the preservative E211. opinion has it that as additives have no nutritional value some children would be better off without them.

there’s been a lot of this in the news lately. how healthy are we? is there a north-south divide? check your area of the wirral in this document. scroll to page 4 and look at those red dots: they’re the bad ones. note that there are only 3 yellows (good things).
if you want to look at other areas (other than the wirral) then click here and search.
