get on the internet as usual
go to http://woodchurchscience.edublogs.org
look for VLE tab across the top and click it
enter the VLE using the link
enter your network username and password
you are now in the VLE
down the left hand side is a long list
look for ‘curriculum’ and click it
look for ’science’
choose your year and the resources will display in the middle

these were the very pinnacle of modern technology about 60 years ago. if you wanted to locate an enemy in the distance, or in the dark. they may look like tubas but in fact they are acoustic locators to pick up distant engine noise. they mimic hearing trumpets, with a similar action.

…looks almost good enough to eat but it’s 12 years old…karen hanrahan has been using the same McDonald’s hamburger as a prop in her “Healthy Choices for Children” class since 1996 — 12 years! — and it’s hardly aged a day in all that time. read more here…

new element, Cp, copernicium added to periodic table

discovered 13 years ago, and officially added to the periodic table just weeks ago, element 112 finally has a name. it will be called “copernicium”, with the symbol Cp, in honour of the astronomer nicolaus copernicus. read more here.

a question from rowan sullivan in year 7. explaining magnetism is not easy but I’ll have a go. in unit 8j you will learn that electricity can produce a magnetic field. substances like iron oxide (magnetite) are members of a group of compounds that have the standard formula A(B)2O4. the A and B represent different metal ions that occupy specific sites in the crystal structure. in the case of magnetite, Fe3O4, the A metal is Fe +2 and the B metal is Fe +3; that’s two different metal ions in two specific sites. this arrangement causes a transfer of electrons between the different irons (ions!) in the structure. this movement of electrons generates the magnetic field.
that more or less explains it but some people have devoted their entire lives and careers to explaining the many types of magnetism. i would recommend you read this page (but only if you are having difficulty sleeping).

when cows are munching on grass they occasionally pick up bits of metal from fencing, staples, nails, bits of bailing wire etc. so to stop any damage to their digestive system (so-called ‘hardware disease’) some kind farmers make their cows eat cow magnets which sit in their stomachs (the reticulum specifically) for the entire life of the cow attracting any old bits of metal. they are available to buy here.

more than a decade after experiments first produced a single atom of a new element, a team of german scientists has been credited with its discovery. you can read about it here. there is some stuff about the last element to be discovered (Ds darmstadtium) in 1994 here.
