instructions for accessing VLE

how to access science resources on the VLE
get on the internet as usual
go to http://woodchurchscience.edublogs.org
look for VLE tab across the top and click it
enter the VLE using the link
enter your network username and password
you are now in the VLE
down the left hand side is a long list
look for ‘curriculum’ and click it
look for ’science’
choose your year and the resources will display in the middle

come and join us tonight at woodchurch high school open evening. visit the science department in action! loads of stuff to see and do…
in chemistry, experiments include…turning copper into gold (!), big explosions, plant indicators, making soap and of course if it’s chemistry it must mean coloured liquids!
physics has the van der graaf generator, energy conversions, light and sound demos, electrical circuits and electromagnetic spectrum.
and over in biology get to see our snakes and lizards, look at jaws, teeth and skulls, and try your hand at food tests.

voting has ended…and the gala edublog awards ceremony will be held on the island of jokaydia in second life at 9.30 on saturday evening 8.12.07. (this is all online…and completely new to me as well!)

the len stirzaker science prize 2006-2007

on awards evening last thursday (13th september 2007) chris henwood was awarded this prestigious prize. here’s the transcript of mrs holt’s speech;

Len Stirzaker worked in WHS for many years as a Science teacher. He was a much valued colleague and friend. He was such a kind, professional gentleman, who loved Science and worked hard to encourage our young people to share his love of Science.
Chris Henwood has always shown a very positive attitude towards his studies in Science. Despite his hearing disability, he always endeavours to make valuable contributions to Science lessons.
In fact, he is always willing to go one step beyond what is expected, often returning at lunchtime and after school in an effort to improve further.
At one time he got involved in Mr Warren’s Science Club, where he was involved in a variety of fun and innovative activities. This activity was to try and draw him out of his shell. It worked, as he participated in a huge range of projects, some of which were more successful than others. These included crystal gardens, cross-linked polymer balls made from custard, pin-hole cameras made from film canisters and he made some bath bombs for his mum!
He was therefore the ideal candidate to be a member of the KS3 Soap-a-Sonic team – 10 enterprising young people running a company from the bottom up. The name, the logo, the manufacturing process, Chris was involved in everything and all done with his infectious enthusiasm.
The Science department were unanimous in putting his name forward for the Len Stirzaker prize as this is exactly the kind of progress that our friend Len would have been so pleased to see rewarded with a prize.

go to http://woodchurchscience.wikispaces.com/soapbox

click on ‘join’ top right hand side
1. fill in username (your choice)
2. fill in password (your choice)
3. fill in email address
4. don’t change (leave it as ‘no’)
hit ‘join’
you will then get a screen that says you’ve created an account
you will also receive an email with a link in it. You have to activate your account by clicking the link.

now re-visit the soapbox project page.
on the left hand side hit the link that says ‘join this space’
fill on your username and password then ’sign in’

you will see a box that is empty, you can put a message in it if you want, but if not then hit ‘request membership’
this will send an email to me, i’ll approve you, then you will be good to go…
any problems let me know.

you will notice that at the end of each post (including this one) there is a clickable link (listen to this podcast) which enables you to hear the post as well as reading it. you could even download each post to your ipod or mp3 player to playback at your leisure. (note that mp3 downloads are blocked in school – sorry).

here’s a couple of links to previous papers and their mark schemes: these are the higher papers from june 2005 (mark scheme here) and the paper from january 2005 (its mark scheme is here). look them up, have a go, mark your own then try more!
