a united nations expert has condemned the growing use of crops to produce biofuels as a replacement for petrol as a ‘crime against humanity’. the un special rapporteur on the right to food, jean ziegler, said he feared biofuels would bring more hunger. just because we’re running out of oil is it right that we should ‘grow fuel’ at the expense of feeding poorer nations?

here’s a quick guide to biofuels.

apparently it is now legal to make up to 2,500 litres of your own biodiesel, enough to run the average family car, without having to pay any tax. “home brewers” can convert chip fat from pubs and restaurants, which would otherwise go straight to landfill. companies who make the kits needed to convert this unwanted oil are reporting a steady rise in sales. some folks are also buying up supplies of vegetable oil to add to their fuel tanks.
food or fuel?
